Cardinals: Offense Needs a Spark

Arizona has been anemic on offense so far this season and must show improvement soon.

The offense needs a spark of life, and moving running back Beanie Wells into the starting lineup might be coach Ken Whisenhunt's latest attempt to find one.

Starter Tim Hightower lost his third fumble of the season Sunday in a 22-10 loss at Seattle, and he struggled in pass protection the previous game.

Wells, meanwhile, has been the team's featured back the past two weeks, but he doesn't start.

The Cardinals have scored one touchdown via the run or pass in the last three weeks, and clearly something has to change.

Whisenhunt is on his third quarterback, Max Hall (including Matt Leinart), and will stick with him provided Hall recovers in time for a concussion suffered against the Seahawks.

The Cardinals have been able to run the ball decently this season; they just have had problems sticking with it because they have fallen behind significantly in three games.

Hightower is still an effective, diligent back, but his fumbles have come at horrible times. Wells has 34 of the team's 44 rushing attempts by backs over the past two weeks, but the Cardinals could use whatever juice they could get by starting him.

Over the past two years, coach Ken Whisenhunt has stuck by Hightower, saying his versatility earned him the edge to be the starter.

But Whisenhunt was non-committal on Monday when asked if Wells would start. That signaled a possible change, one that Whisenhunt probably won't reveal until shortly before Sunday's game.

"We can't live with (the fumbles) going forward," Whisenhunt said. "Momentum was starting to turn. We were moving the ball."
