Injuries Not Helping Cardinals

The Cardinals have lost five straight games and two key injuries suffered in Kansas City won't help their cause.

The Cardinals sustained injuries Sunday at two positions where they can least afford them.

Outside linebacker Will Davis likely is out for the season after suffering a broken left fibula. Starting defensive end Calais Campbell suffered a sprained left ankle, and he will be evaluated as the week progresses.

Davis has started three of the last four games in place of Clark Haggans, who is struggling through a groin pull. A second-year player, Davis had filled in capably, and the Cardinals have little depth behind him.

They are hoping that Haggans can play this week. Either way, rookie O'Brien Schofield probably will see extended playing time.

Schofield has practiced for just a month after starting the season on the reserve/non-football injury list.

The injuries at outside linebacker highlight the team's lack of depth at the position. Haggans and Joey Porter, the starters, are each 33 years old. The club cut second-round pick Cody Brown in the preseason.

Davis, in his second year, was the top young backup, although coaches are excited about Schofield's pass-rush potential.

Campbell, the starting right end, had been splitting time with Alan Branch. Backup Kenny Iwebema went out last week with a torn ACL, and starting left end Darnell Dockett is playing despite a stinger that produced weakness and pain in his left shoulder and arm.

To compensate, the Cardinals can use nose tackle Bryan Robinson as a reserve defensive end, with Dan Williams and Gabe Watson taking over at nose tackle.
