Cards: Whiz Sticks with Anderson, no Skelton

QB Derek Anderson will remain the starter in Arizona while rookie John Skelton still isn't ready to log playing time.

Despite a six-game losing streak, Derek Anderson will remain the Cardinals quarterback because he gives the team its best chance to win, coach Ken Whisenhunt said.

A strong case could be made that the Cardinals (3-8) are the worst team in the NFL. They have not been competitive in their last three games, losing by at least 18 points in each.

But coach Ken Whisenhunt remains more concerned about this season than preparing for 2011. So he will keep rookie quarterback Max Hall and John Skelton on the bench, at least for now.

"As hard as it is to say, I have seen Derek in here working his tail off," Whisenhunt said. "He's in here every morning. He's committed to trying to get better. I have seen improvement over the last few weeks. I think he gives us the best chance to win right now."

Anderson has started the last four games after regaining the job he lost after the first four weeks of the season. He has reduced his number of turnovers, with just two interceptions in the last month.

But Anderson isn't making any big plays, either. He has thrown for three touchdowns in those four starts and missed a handful of open receivers for big plays.

Whisenhunt, however, doesn't think it's time to turn to one of the rookies. Hall struggled greatly in his three starts, throwing for only one touchdown and getting four passes intercepted.

He looked overmatched, and coaches think Skelton is even further behind. Skelton won't play this season unless injuries dictate, Whisenhunt said.

"He's a young guy, hasn't gotten a lot of reps, and you run the risk of damaging a young player when you put him there to play," the coach said. "I have very high hopes for John and his future. His time is going to come. I can't say that won't happen at some point this year, but right now I don't think it's the direction you want to go."
