With Anderson and Hall out with injuries, Skelton and Bartel will carry the load under center.

The Arizona Cardinals’ season to forget hit a new low point with their seventh-straight loss to St. Louis on Sunday. To add injury to insult, rookie quarterback Max Hall suffered a separated shoulder in the second half and was subsequently placed on Injured Reserve Monday, ending his season.

Adding to the Redbirds’ woes under center, Derek Anderson has yet to be cleared from a concussion also sustained Sunday.

To backup rookie John Skelton against Denver, the team picked up Richard Bartel, a UFL product most recently with the Washington Redskins during training camp.

While Skelton showed flashes against the Rams (3/6, 45 yards), coach Ken Whisenhunt had stated several times that this year’s fifth-round pick would not see the field, with Sunday’s appearance being an emergency situation.

Bartel has experience, the Cards being his fifth NFL franchise in four seasons, but has never thrown a pass in a regular season game. The coaching staff was impressed by Bartel’s performance against them in the preseason with the Redskins (12/14, 125 yards, TD).

In a quarterback-driven league, the Cardinals have been stalled in their efforts to replace Kurt Warner and it has shown in their record. It now falls to Skelton and Bartel to resuscitate an offense that has not scored a touchdown in two weeks and is starving for a leader going forward.
