The Arizona Cardinals are off to a 1-0 start in the preseason and get back to the training camp…
Cards' Johnson set to fill in with Wilson out
Wilson is going to try to rehab the injury without surgery. He didn't speak to reporters after Monday's practice, but coach Ken Whisenhunt said, "We do expect for him to play this season." Whether Wilson will be ready for the Sept. 11 season opener is in serious doubt, although rookie cornerback Patrick Peterson said the veteran told him he'd be ready by Week 1.
In the meantime, Rashad Johnson will start alongside Kerry Rhodes, and Matt Ware has been re-signed. The Arizona Republic reported that rookie safety Andrew Rich has decided he doesn't want to play anymore.
It's a setback for Wilson, who had fully recovered from surgery to repair an abductor muscle in January that bothered him all of last season.
A third-round pick in 2009, Johnson has yet to play up to expectations. He struggled mightily as a rookie, most because of poor tackling, although he did improve last season and played an integral role in the team's dime package.
The Cardinals like to use three or four safeties in those schemes. Wilson often moves down to linebacker, and free safety Kerry Rhodes will play a variety of roles, including defending the tight end, blitzing or playing single-high as the deep safety. Johnson has gradually assumed a larger role, and now will be thrust into a starting job for at least several weeks.
