Trades threaten to backfire on Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals made what looked to be solid trades at the time but are now left with little depth at a handful of positions.

The Cardinals made two bold trades as training camp opened and then watched as injuries hit the positions they traded away. Running back Tim Hightower was traded to the Redskins, then running back Ryan Williams suffered a torn patellar tendon and is out for the year.

Cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was sent to the Eagles, then starter Greg Toler suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and is out for the year.

The Cardinals have some depth at cornerback and bolstered that by signing cornerback Fred Bennett, who was released this week by the Bengals.

The team will wait to address the running back situation. LaRod Stephens-Howling and Alfonso Smith are the backups, but the Cardinals likely will go after a player who is cut by another team. Among the interesting names could be Chester Taylor, Tashard Choice or Steve Slaton.
