Several Jayhawks To Get NFL Opportunity

Over the weekend, former Kansas offensive lineman Tanner Hawkinson made news, as he was selected in the fifth round by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Over the weekend, former Kansas offensive lineman Tanner Hawkinson made news, as he was selected in the fifth round by the Cincinnati Bengals.

The honor is the culmination of a legendary career as a Jayhawk, for the McPherson native that started a school record 48 games, including 48 consecutive starts.

Hawkinson is one of nine former Jayhawks that will get an opportunity to compete in the National Football League.

Quarterback Dayne Crist, defensive end/fullback Toben Opurum and safety Bradley McDougald all received offers from the Kansas City Chiefs and will participate in the team's rookie camp, which begins May 9th.

Linebacker Tunde Bakare received an invitation from the Chicago Bears and will head north. Bakare played in 23 games during his two-year Kansas career, starting in seven games at linebacker. He had 87 career tackles.

Defensive end Josh Williams will join Bakare with the Chicago Bears. Williams transferred to Kansas from Nebraska for his final season of eligibility. In 2012, he started all 12 games at defensive end for the Jayhawks in 2012recroding 24 tackles, including two tackles for loss. He also added three fumble recoveries and forced a fumble.

Cornerback Greg Brown is on his way to the San Diego Chargers after a solid career at KU. Brown played in 50 games during his career, making 28 starts at cornerback. He recorded 171 career tackles, including a career-best 73 his senior season. He also had five career interceptions.

Offensive lineman Trevor Marrongelli received an invite from the Detroit Lions. Marrongelli started 30 games during his Kansas career, playing both guard and center. He started the final 24 games of his career.

Fellow offensive lineman Dwayne Zlatnik is headed to Jacksonville to join the Jaguars. Zlatnik earned Big 12 Honorable Mention honors in 2012 from the Associated Press. He started 32 games during his Kansas career, playing both guard positions. He started the final 31 of the final 32 games of his career.
