There's a world of difference between two of the New England Patriots, and it isn't all based on…
NFL Scores Preseason Week One
PATRIOTS 31, EAGLES 22
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Michael Vick took an early lead over Nick Foles in the first round of the Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback competition.
Tom Brady led the New England Patriots to a pair of 80-yard TD drives in his only two series in a 31-22 win over Philadelphia on Friday night.
Vick threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to DeSean Jackson, but the new-look Eagles kicked off the Chip Kelly era the same way they ended Andy Reid's long tenure — with another loss.
Kelly's biggest decision will be picking a starting quarterback. Vick and Foles each led the Eagles to a touchdown in two series apiece.
Vick's came against New England's starters and he looked sharp, completing 4 of 5 passes for 94 yards. Foles lost a fumble on his second play and then went 5 of 6 for 43 yards. Kelly already said Foles will start next Thursday night against Carolina.
Tim Tebow made his New England debut after backup Ryan Mallett left with a head injury late in the second quarter. Tebow was 4 of 12 for 55 yards and ran for 31 yards on four carries.
Brady finished 7 of 8 for 65 yards and one TD.
SAINTS 17, CHIEFS 13
New Orleans (AP) — Preston Parker had a pair of touchdown catches in his bid to fill one open receiver spots, and New Orleans defeated Kansas City in coach Sean Payton's first game back from his bounty suspension.
New Chiefs coach Andy Reid saw all he needed of new starting quarterback Alex Smith in the opening drive, which went 80 yards on 14 plays, capped by Jamaal Charles' TD run. Smith was 7 of 8 for 68 yards.
Drew Brees was 7 of 10 for 65 yards in two series, which produced one field goal.
His longest completion went for 22 yards to rookie Kenny Stills, who like Parker is a candidate to replace injured deep threat Joe Morgan as the Saints' No. 3 receiver behind Marques Colston and Lance Moore.
TEXANS 27, VIKINGS 13
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Rookie DeAndre Hopkins caught a 34-yard touchdown pass in Houston's victory over Minnesota.
The Vikings showcased their rookie wide receiver, too, during a flashy first half by Cordarrelle Patterson.
Hopkins, the 27th overall pick in the draft, had four receptions for 52 yards. Patterson, taken two slots later, caught four passes for 54 yards and returned the opening kickoff 50 yards.
Christian Ponder connected with Jerome Simpson for 15 yards right after that, but when he went back to Simpson on the next play the throw was a bit high and bounced off Simpson's hands and into Shiloh Keo's for an interception.
Ponder, entering a critical third season for his future as Minnesota's quarterback, only took those two snaps.
CARDINALS 17, PACKERS 0
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Stepfan Taylor rushed for 63 yards on 21 carries in his rookie debut, and Arizona picked apart Green Bay on both sides of the ball.
Tyrann Mathieu had a sack in his first game in two years, and also returned two punts for Arizona, which was playing its first game under new coach Bruce Arians.
Aaron Rodgers connected with James Jones on a 50-yard gain in his only series, and Vince Young showed flashes of potential just three days after signing with Green Bay. But those were among the only highlights for the Packers, who were shut out in a full preseason game for the first time since 1987. The Packers also were shut out in the 2003 Hall of Fame game, although that game was called because of lightning with 5:49 left in the third quarter.
LIONS 26, JETS 17
DETROIT (AP) — Mark Sanchez had an interception returned for a touchdown, and Geno Smith left with an apparent ankle injury in New York's loss to Detroit.
Lions rookie Ziggy Ansah made an immediate impression, intercepting Sanchez's pass and returning it 14 yards for a touchdown. The 6-foot-5 defensive end from Ghana put his hands up just in time to pick off Sanchez's screen pass in the first quarter. He had an easy return to the end zone for the game's first TD.
Sanchez played three series, going 10 of 13 for 125 yards and a touchdown. Smith was 6 of 7 for 47 yards but left shortly after halftime.
Detroit's Matthew Stafford was 3 of 8 for 58 yards.
DOLPHINS 27, JAGUARS 3
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Ryan Tannehill connected with Dustin Keller for a 22-yard touchdown, and Miami thumped Jacksonville.
Tannehill played a little longer and a lot smoother in his second preseason game. The Jaguars can only hope Blaine Gabbert will do the same.
Tannehill completed 5 of 9 passes for 75 yards, getting things rolling late in the first quarter. He connected with Keller for a 24-yard gain and then found the former New York Jets tight end five plays later for a score. Safety Chris Prosinski looked lost on the play, the first of many mistakes for the rebuilding Jaguars.
Jacksonville finished with four turnovers.
Gabbert was hoping to make a strong impression in Jacksonville's preseason opener. But Gabbert looked a lot like he did in his first two seasons. He completed 5 of 10 passes for 19 yards, with an interception.
PANTHERS 24, BEARS 17
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) —Chicago forced three first-half turnovers and linebacker Jonathan Bostic returned an interception 51 yards for a touchdown, but Carolina capitalized on turnovers to spoil Marc Trestman's NFL head coaching debut.
The Bears — who forced four turnovers — picked up where they left off last season when they led the NFL with 44 takeaways and finished with nine defensive touchdowns, one shy of the league record.
Chicago's offense, however, left plenty of room for improvement.
Jay Cutler was intercepted on his first play from scrimmage by Josh Norman, setting up a touchdown pass from Cam Newton to Brandon LaFell. Cutler completed 6 of 8 passes for 56 yards but the Bears had three turnovers and allowed seven sacks.
Newton was 3 of 6 for 16 yards.
Norman had two interceptions, including one he returned 60 yards for a score.
RAIDERS 19, COWBOYS 17
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Sean Lee and rookie J.J. Wilcox forced first-half turnovers for Dallas' revamped defense before Oakland rallied for the victory.
Lee flattened Matt Flynn on a delayed blitz on the opening drive of the game to force a fumble deep in Oakland territory in his first action since a season-ending toe injury last October.
Wilcox intercepted an ill-advised pass from Terrelle Pryor in the end zone to thwart a promising Raiders drive.
The Cowboys forced just 16 turnovers last year, contributing to the firing of coordinator Rob Ryan, who was replaced by Monte Kiffin as the defense moved from a three-man front to a four-man front. Dallas has forced four turnovers in its first two preseason games under Kiffin.
NFL Preseason Capsules: Thurs. Aug 8th
TAMPA,Fla. (AP) — Joe Flacco was sharp in his preseason debut, Bernard Pierce scored on a 20-yard run and a revamped Baltimore defense forced four turnovers in the Ravens' 44-16 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night.
Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor threw a pair of TD passes for the Super Bowl champions, including a 21-yarder to LaQuan Williams, who also scored when he recovered a blocked punt in the end zone.
Josh Freeman and the rest of Tampa Bay's starters played sparingly, so most of Baltimore's scoring came against backups and newcomers to a defense that ranked last in the NFL against the pass last season.
Flacco signed a $120.1 million contract this offseason after leading the Ravens to their second NFL title. He worked two series, completing seven of nine passes for 57 yards and one interception.
BRONCOS 10, 49ERS 6
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Super Bowl runner-up San Francisco committed three first-half turnovers, four in all, and missed a field goal in a sloppy loss to Denver.
Shaun Phillips scooped up D.J. Harper's second-quarter fumble and returned it 9 yards for the game's lone touchdown. Mike Adams added a timely interception as the Broncos began anew following that stunning double-overtime loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens in the AFC divisional playoffs.
With the star quarterbacks on either side — Broncos veteran Peyton Manning and third-year pro Colin Kaepernick — playing all of one series each, it was impossible to gauge how good their given offenses will be. Everybody realizes if these teams were to play a meaningful matchup it could really be something, though.
SEAHAWKS 31, CHARGERS 10
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Tarvaris Jackson threw two touchdown passes and Brady Quinn, also battling to be Russell Wilson's backup, threw for another score to help Seattle rout San Diego in Mike McCoy's debut as Chargers coach.
Wilson, who led the Seahawks to the playoffs last year as a rookie, played the first three series. He threw for 23 yards and ran for 9.
Quinn threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jermaine Kearse late in the first half.
Jackson threw a 42-yard scoring pass to Stephen Williams on the first play of the fourth quarter and hit Derrick Coleman on a 6-yarder in the final minutes. Jackson also threw a 41-yard pass to Williams to set up Spencer Ware's 6-yard scoring run late in the third quarter.
Manti Te'o had a quiet debut at inside linebacker for the Chargers, with no tackles during the first two series.
BENGALS 34, FALCONS 10
ATLANTA (AP) — Giovani Bernard ran for a touchdown, Josh Johnson directed two second-quarter touchdown drives and Cincinnati cruised.
Bernard, a second-round pick from North Carolina competing for a significant share of the Bengals' carries, played behind returning starter Benjarvus Green-Ellis and had 10 carries for 28 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown run. He added three catches for 16 yards.
Johnson, up against John Skelton for the backup job behind Andy Dalton, made big plays with his arm and legs. Johnson passed for 100 yards, including a 21-yard score to Brandon Tate, and ran for 64 yards.
Dane Sanzenbacher had a 71-yard punt return for a touchdown and a 36-yard scoring catch from Skelton.
New Falcons running back Steven Jackson found little blocking as he had five carries for only 8 yards.
REDSKINS 22, TITANS 21
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Kirk Cousins picked up where he left off last season filling in at quarterback, throwing for a touchdown as Washington edged Tennessee.
The Redskins sat eight starters, including Robert Griffin III, who warmed up and was on the field. Cousins looked sharp in Griffin's place, completing six of seven passes for 52 yards and a TD for a 137.2 passer rating in two series for the defending NFC East champs.
The Titans showed off their revamped run game as Chris Johnson scored on a 58-yard burst. Tennessee had 92 yards rushing and a 14-7 lead after the first quarter; Shonn Greene added a 19-yard TD run.
Pat White scored on a 9-yard TD run with 2:23 left and found Emmanuel Ogbuehi for the 2-point conversion to avoid overtime.
BROWNS 27, RAMS 19
CLEVELAND (AP) — Brandon Weeden threw a touchdown pass and led Cleveland on two scoring drives, and Travis Benjamin returned a punt 91 yards for a TD as the Browns won coach Rob Chudzinski's exhibition debut.
Weeden finished 10 of 13 for 112 yards, which should help end any talk of a quarterback competition in Cleveland. Chudzinski has not yet chosen Weeden his starter, but the second-year QB did everything he needed to secure the job.
Weeden hooked up with running back Dion Lewis, starting for Trent Richardson, for a 2-yard TD on the first play of the second quarter.
St. Louis' Sam Bradford threw a 3-yard TD pass to Chris Givens as Rams coach Jeff Fisher left his starting offense in after Benjamin's runback made it 17-0.
