Cardinals Sign Doucet for Three Years

The Arizona Cardinals are racking in the rookie signings. Third-round wide receiver Early Doucet is the latest. Per club policy, terms were not disclosed, but AZRedReport.com has the details.

Scout.com’s NFL Insider Adam Caplan has reported that rookie receiver Early Doucet has signed a three-year deal with the following base salaries: $295,000 (2008), $385,000 (2009) $470,000 (2010). Doucet also tacked on a $550,000 signing bonus.

Doucet is expected to compete with Steve Breaston for the slot-receiver role this season. Doucet’s former LSU wide receiver coach DJ McCarthy thinks the “playmaker” will have no problem earning a roster spot.

“Early is crafty,” McCarthy told AZRedReport.com. “It’s going to be tough to keep him off the field because he can play multiple positions. He is going to make plays. When the lights are on Early shines the best.”

Many are comparing Doucet to Anquan Boldin. They have a similar built and both have an extended intellect of the game, stemming from their high school quarterback backgrounds.

“They both want to be the best in everything they do,” McCarthy said. “They both have close to the same 40 yard dash time, and both got drafted a little later than they wanted to be. Because of that, it seems like both of them carry chips on their shoulders and use that to motivate them on the field. Finally they are both quality kids and will do everything that they have asked you to do.”

The Cardinals are banking on the above sentiment. Doucet has the finesse and speed to be a more than a depth player in Arizona.
