The Arizona Cardinals have placed backup S Matt Ware on injured reserve (knee) and signed free-agent K Mike Nugent to a one-year deal, the team announced Wednesday.
Nugent (5-10, 190) began the season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after signing with the team as a free agent this past offseason. He appeared in four games with the Buccaneers and attempted six field goals before being released on October 5.
Originally entering the NFL as a second-round selection (47th overall) of the Jets in the 2005 NFL Draft out of Ohio State University, Nugent spent his first four seasons in New York where he connected on 75 of 92 field goals (81.5%) and scored 308 points while playing in 49 games. His 88.9 field goal percentage in 2006 (24 of 27) was the most accurate figure in Jets team history and his 308 points scored ranks eighth all-time and fourth among kickers in Jets team history for points scored.
Starting K Neil Rackers has been nursing a right groin injury for a few weeks. Nugent, who a source said worked out for the Cardinals two weeks ago, could be filling in for Rackers on Sunday when the team takes on the Detroit Lions.
