The Kurt Warner-less Cardinals need to shore up a couple quarterbacks this offseason not only for depth, but also to compete with Matt Leinart. Former Arizona State Sundevil, turned BYU powerhouse Max Hall, wants to be that guy.

The best thing to happen to BYU quarterback Max Hall this year was Drew Brees. The second could be landing a spot on the Arizona Cardinals roster.

The undersized quarterback (6-foot-1, 209) enjoyed watching Brees success this year because the two share the same height and a similar build. Like Brees, Hall believes he can prove to people that he can do the job.

On Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine, Hall mentioned several times that he has the smarts to be an NFL quarterback. Brees has already proved a quarterback of his stature can get the job done, so the rest is up to Hall and his training posse that has some notable names.

Hall, who grew up in Mesa, AZ, is working out in nearby Scottsdale.

“I’ve spent a lot of time with Rod Dowhower, working out with him; my Uncle Danny [White]; and then Charlie Frye has been working out with me," Hall said of his time in Scottsdale. "I’ve spent a lot of time with him in the past two months, getting ready for- not only the Combine, but for the NFL.”

Hall would relish the chance to stick around.

“It would be unbelievable to go play in Arizona and to be there in my hometown and to be able to live there with my family, it would be something really cool if I could do that.”

Hall, who is married, originally planned to stay in the desert when he committed to Arizona State University. After red-shirting his freshman season, and going on this Latter Day Saints mission, Hall changed his mind.

“I had a chance to represent my faith at BYU and for religious reasons to go there. So it was a tough decision, but it was the right decision for me.”

Hall is a genuinely likeable guy, and could remind people of a recent departed Cardinal. Hall watched Kurt Warner throughout Warner's Cardinals tenure and wouldn't mind the comparison.

“I know that he is a good Christian guy. I’ve heard nothing but great things about him. I’ve never had a chance to meet him or anything, but he’s a guy obviously I’ve watched in Arizona. A guy I really like to watch. So yeah, I respect the guy a lot.”

Although Hall was a surprise Combine invite to some, he's going to make the most of every opportunity. Since the top-rated quarterbacks are being picky about throwing at the Combine, Hall gets more eyes on him.

“It gives me more of a stage to shine; to show my skills. So I am looking forward to it, been training for it, and I am actually excited for Sunday to come around and finally go out and run around a little bit and throw the ball around because that’s what I like to do."

Teams should also pay attention to Hall's record at BYU. He won 32 football games with the team, the most in the school's history.

“It’s a special compliment to me. I was lucky enough to play three years and have the opportunity to do it.”
