QB Charlie Whitehurst Visits Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals are quite the hostesses this week. According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, San Diego Chargers' Charlie Whitehurst is the current guest.

Chargers QB Charlie Whitehurst is visiting the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen. Whitehurst is a restricted free agent, so the Chargers would have the right to match any offer he receives. If San Diego declines to match, it would receive Arizona's 2010 third-round pick.

Whitehurst was a third-round pick out of Clemson in 2006. He has accounted himself well in San Diego but is buried on the depth chart behind Pro Bowler Philip Rivers and veteran Billy Volek.

San Diego GM A.J. Smith places a premium on being three-deep at the quarterback position, but it's unlikely San Diego would match an offer for Whitehurst given the Chargers' needs at other positions.

The best case scenario for the Cardinals would be to supplement their quarterback unit with both a veteran through free agency and possibly a long-term solution via the draft.

The Cardinals have expressed confidence in QB Matt Leinart, but Ken Whisenhunt told a local radio station on Tuesday that he will sign a veteran signal caller to compete with the former Heisman Trophy winner.
