Ed Gant’s chances of making the Arizona Cardinals’ roster took a major hit Monday.

The NFL suspended the second-year receiver for the first four games of the 2010 season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Gant spent last season on the Cardinals’ practice squad after being signed as an undrafted free agent from North Alabama. He was expected to push rookie Andre Roberts and Onrea Jones for the fourth or fifth receiver spot in training camp.

The Florida native’s chances were not helped after struggling during OTAs with consistency and too many dropped balls. That coupled with this suspension could spell the end for Gant’s career in Arizona.

Gant will be eligible to participate in training camp and Arizona’s four pre-season games. Both the league and Gant’s agent, Tyrone Barnes, declined to comment.
