Schofield Breaks in with Arizona

Posted Jul 28, 2010

After agreeing to terms with fourth-round draft pick O'Brien Schofield, the Arizona Cardinals have just two remaining unsigned rookies.

With less than a week before training camp begins, the Cardinals signed their fifth draft pick, inking linebacker O'Brien Schofield to a four-year contract. Terms were not disclosed for the team’s fourth-round selection from Wisconsin.

Schofield tallied 17 sacks and 33 tackles for a loss in his collegiate career, earning first-team All-Big 10 honors as a senior. Schofield continued his stellar play into the East-West Shrine Game, earning the Defensive MVP award.

However, Schofield’s path to the NFL was hindered the next week during Senior Bowl practice when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. Schofield had been projected as a possible first-round talent prior to his injury.

Despite a devastating setback, Schofield hopes to play this year. It is unlikely he will participate in training camp or the preseason as he continues to heal. When he is cleared to practice, Schofield is expected to challenge Cody Brown, Will Davis and Stevie Baggs for playing time in a linebacking corps in need of playmakers.

With Schofield under contract, only two draft picks remain unsigned: TCU linebacker Daryl Washington and Tennessee defensive lineman Dan Williams. Arizona will continue to negotiate with both players with the goal of having them signed in the next few weeks.

To make room for Schofield on the roster, the Cardinals cut ties with offensive tackle Devin Tyler, a rookie free agent from Temple.

The Cardinals commence their 2010 training camp in Flagstaff on July 31st.
