Ryan Knowles breaks down what transpired at training camp on Monday, including a skirmish or two.

The wet conditions continued in Flagstaff, forcing the Cardinals inside for the second straight day. But even the rains could not dampen the Big Red’s feisty spirits, as there were several skirmishes during the afternoon session Monday. Activities were a little cramped inside the Walkup Skydome, but the Cards still had a very competitive practice. They also received some good news off the field with the signing of first-round draft pick Dan Williams.

Injuries: Linebackers Gerald Hayes (back) and O’Brien Schofield (knee) continued to miss time due to their respective surgeries. Fellow linebacker Reggie Walker was down on the turf for a bit after a play, but got up and continued with a noticeable limp.

Highlights: Fights, Fights, Fights! Darnell Dockett got into a scrum with Matt Leinart and the offensive line during a quarterback-rushing drill. After beating Alan Faneca, Dockett tripped Leinart then caught a fist to the head from Levi Brown. After some grabbing and shoving, players were separated. There were a few more smaller scuffles during the day, but that is to be expected. They are a sign that camp is in full swing and players are eager to get the season started.

During a quarterback drill, throwing into a plastic bin, quarterbacks’ coach Chris Miller showed up his players making five of six tosses from about 25 yards out.

Leinart and Early Doucet seem to be creating a solid rapport. Leinart connected to Doucet with an impressive 20-yard strike during the morning session.

Pass rushers were pinning their ears back. Ali Highsmith and Joey Porter would have obliterated their respective quarterbacks during drills were they not teammates.

Position Battles: Beanie Wells and Tim Hightower are both pushing for time. Hightower had some sharp runs up the middle today, while Wells made some nice moves on a screen pass.

Safety Rashad Johnson is pressing for time after an unimpressive rookie season. He seems to have caught up to the speed of the game, made some plays early in camp and is in a position to contribute going forward.

Rookie wideout Andre Roberts was expected to challenge for the No. 4 receiver position, but has been plagued by drops through the first few practices. Larry Fitzgerald has taken the Citadel product under his wing it seems to get him through his “growing pains”.
