Training camp rolled on in Flagstaff on Tuesday as Big Red received a break from the wet conditions. While not as spirited as yesterday, players were still very competitive as they went 11-on-11 for a good portion of the day. A big story was the initial appearance of top pick Dan Williams in full pads for the first time.
Injuries: Cornerback Rashad Barksdale (foot) and linebacker Reggie Walker (unknown) joined tight end Jim Dray (quad) and safety Hamza Abdullah (hamstring) on the sidelines. Tight end Anthony Becht, defensive tackle Bryan Robinson and linebacker Joey Porter all missed practice as well. Linebackers Gerald Hayes (back) and O’Brien Schofield (knee) will miss extended time rehabbing from their respective surgeries.
Roster Moves: The Cardinals made a couple moves on Tuesday, signing veteran safety Aaron Rouse and linebacker Pago Togafu. Linebacker Ali Highsmith and wide receiver Deryn Bowser were released. To make room for Williams on the roster, Arizona also waived injured defensive end Dean Muhtadi.
Highlights: Some of the intensity from yesterday carried over today when receiver Larry Fitzgerald knocked cornerback Michael Adams’ helmet off with a shot to the head. The two squared off for a few moments before coaches broke it up and the two were forced to hug-it-out.
Offensive tackle Brandon Keith continues to impress. Matched up with Darnell Dockett, the third-year product shut down the talented pass rusher. Keith has been penciled in as the starter on the right side and is starting to put a stranglehold on the position.
Andre Roberts looked much better today catching passes. The rookie wideout has suffered from a case of the “dropsies” early on in camp, but has been mentored by Fitzgerald and it seems to be working. Roberts is being pushed by undrafted free agent Stephen Williams and Onrea Jones, so he will need to have a solid camp to see snaps in 2010.
Dan Williams looked good in his first training camp practice. The 7,000 ft elevation did have him sucking wind by the end of practice though. Williams refused to pull a “Dez Bryant” and carried Dockett’s pads after the whistle sounded.
Quote of the Day: “I told Fitz yesterday I was going to start a fight today because everyone else was. I figure I’d try one…you can take it back to my rookie year, me and Fitz. We get into scuffles all the time. I get a little bit emotional at times. I guess it is that short man’s syndrome in me.” –Cornerback Michael Adams on his scuffle with Larry Fitzgerald.
