Cards: Roberts' Redemption, Bridges Impresses

Rookie wideout Andre Roberts redeemed himself and tackle Jeremy Brides impressed upfront.

After a week of showers, the sun beat down in Flagstaff on Tuesday afternoon as Cardinals training camp moved back outdoors. The crowd gathered around the practice fields east of the Skydome to take in the day's action.

Tuesday afternoons practice was more physical than in previous days, with the offensive and defensive lines donning pads and running drills against each other. Running backs Beanie Wells and Tim Hightower also ran against the defensive line with serious contact for the first time. Wells again looked fast and strong between the tackles, but the defensive line also showcased talented young players. Calais Campbell penetrated the offensive line twice and second-round draft pick Daryl Washington stopped Wells in his tracks at the line of scrimmage.

On the offensive side of the line, tackle Jeremy Bridges impressed, overpowering every defensive lineman who came his way, twice knocking defensive end Kenny Iwebema to the turf. The offensive line also did a fair job opening holes for Wells and Hightower.

Rookie wideout Andre Roberts continued returning kicks on Tuesday, this time fielding punts from Ben Graham while under pressure from the special teams unit. If Roberts can continue to improve, the former FCS All-American could be returning kicks come September.

Notes

  • Fan sentiment is clearly on the side of Leinart as the starter.

  • Beanie Wells might be the most motivated guy at camp, wherever he sees daylight he guns it and runs over anything in his way. He wants to be a great running back and has all the tools.

  • The defense is going to be a scrappy unit. The loss of Antrel Rolle and Karlos Dansby will certainly be felt, and this unit will have to work hard to make big plays. But they seem motivated enough to do so. The players are getting after each other, which is just what they need.

  • The offensive line is showing promise and will be one of the areas to watch as training camp progresses.

  • Darnell Dockett appears to be a player-coach at this point, his hands are all over everything and his mouth never stops moving.
