For Darnell Dockett, a new contract has been a long time coming. His time came on Wednesday as the Pro Bowl defensive tackle inked a 4-year, $48 million extension, with nearly $31 million guaranteed.

Dockett has been a force up front for Arizona since the team drafted the Florida State alum in the third round of the 2004 NFL Draft. He collected 57 tackles in 2009 and led the team with seven sacks on his way to a first team All-Pro selection. Two years ago, Dockett tied a Super Bowl record with three sacks against Pittsburgh.

Dockett has been outspoken about his contract situation, missing offseason workouts before the 2008 and 2009 seasons. But he has been an anchor on the defensive line, starting every game for the last five years. Dockett's streak of 81 consecutive starts sets the tone for the Cardinals in the trenches, an area that should help carry the team in 2010.

Due to his tremendous work ethic, continued progression into a leader and his well-chronicled past, Dockett has plenty of supporters within the Cardinals organization. Furthermore, Dockett's personality and interaction within the community have made him a fan favorite.
