Monroe Headed to Tampa Bay

Texas athlete D.J. Monroe signed a free agent contact with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Monday.

"It is a dream come true," Monroe said. "I just want to thank God first because without him none of this would've been possible. I am just excited and overwhelmed at the same time. I have just been given the chance to live out one of my dreams that I have always wanted to live out in my life.

"With me graduating with honors as one of my big goals and now me going into the NFL, it is just great," Monroe said. "I am just excited that they saw something in me that a lot of other people didn't. I am ready to go play football and show Buc Nation how we do it."

Monroe scored on his first-ever collegiate play when he returned a kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown against Louisiana Monroe as a freshman. And he holds the Texas school record for most kickoff returns for a touchdown with three. He averaged 13.4 yards per play on 195 career touches, with more than 500 all-purpose yards in each of his four seasons.

"D.J. Monroe has speed, and you can't coach speed," said Texas coach Mack Brown. "One of the only guys who returned three kickoffs for touchdowns here. He played wide receiver for us, and he can play slot in the NFL for sure, and be a kick returner in all areas. Anyone that can run that fast deserves a good look."

Marquise Goodwin earned plenty of mention, and rightfully so, for his elite speed. But Monroe was also a first-team All-America at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships after helping the Longhorns place sixth in the 4x100. He won the 2006 4A state championship in the 100-meter dash by running 10.45 second time.
