Week 3: Cardinals Game Plan Against Colts

Many faces have changed since the Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts last met but the game plan remains the same: stop Peyton Manning.

GAME PLAN: The Cardinals offensive tackles, Mike Gandy and Levi Brown, must be able to protect Kurt Warner off the edge. Look for the Cardinals to continue to use a short passing game and try to make yards after the catch. They also will try to slow down the edge rush with screens and flare passes. Defensively, the Cardinals need to pressure Manning and not give up big plays.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Cardinals LT Mike Gandy vs. Colts DRE Dwight Freeney. The Cardinals won't give Gandy much help. Gandy struggles with speed rushers, and no one is better than Freeney.

Cardinals RT Levi Brown vs. Colts DLE Robert Mathis. Brown's strength is run blocking and he struggled in the opener against the 49ers Parys Haralson. He must do a better technical job. Brown didn't take good pass sets against the 49ers and was slow to get his hands up and on defenders.

Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald vs. Colts CB Kelvin Hayden. Fitzgerald has been fairly quiet this season. He has two touchdowns but his longest catch has been 25 yards. The Cardinals need to find a way to get the ball deep to him.

INJURY IMPACT: WR Anquan Boldin is nearing 100 percent after suffering a hamstring pull several weeks ago. Boldin looked more explosive last week against the Jaguars.

--WR Steve Breaston appears to be getting close to fully recovering from a knee injury that kept him out of the opener. Breaston was productive last week and might be able to return punts.

--OLB Chike Okeafor missed last week's game with a shoulder injury but is expected to play Sunday.

--S Matt Ware missed last week's game with a shoulder stinger, his second in as many weeks, and likely will be questionable this week.

--OT Levi Brown suffered an ankle sprain last week but returned to the game and should be able to play.

--QB Kurt Warner has a sore right shoulder, the result of a stinger suffered in the first week. He is able to play but a hit on the shoulder could cause more problems.
